60 – moving forward on my terms

I’m 60 and I’m in my prime. I’m going to move forward on my terms.
Many people talk of growing old disgracefully. I’m never too sure what they mean, but in my mind, they are going to act like many in their teens and early 20s, drinking too much and giving it large.
But that’s not me.

Nor am I going to drift into wearing classical clothes and playing it safe. I don’t want a traditional ageing where I buy beige clothes and drift into coach holidays.

I intend to do what I can to stay healthy. I go to the gym and work out with weights three times a week. I want to age well and keep active for as long as I can.

60 – moving forward on my terms. This is a time where we can make choices.

One choice will be to embrace my grey. So, I’m going to stop having my hair dyed dark brown, add ash highlights and within a year should be grey.
I don’t want to dress like Im 20 or 30, but I want to dress like the quirky me. For the past few years Ive been wearing 50s dressing and embracing a vintage vibe but I don’t think this is where I want to stay. I prefer classic clothes with a bit of a twist – I want to buy less and truly love each item of clothing. I’m inspired by the fashion designer Margaret Howell jeans and plain tops with masculine shoes.
I don’t want to fear ageing so that I resort to cosmetic surgery. I have regular facials, but draw the line to Botox, fillers etc. Whats wrong with a few lines they show that Ive lived my life.
Back to age. I’m middle aged, and likely to be in this age range till I’m well into my 70s. For me old age is when you are in decline. I’m happy to be classed as middle aged or mid-life, my preference.
My age is an asset. Im mature, I have 25+ years experience as a career psychologist and can draw on this to help others. But its not just about my work, all of us in mid-life have had many life experiences and have the wisdom to share with others.
I will continue to love my life and do the things I want to do, and hope to find other people on my wave length. I want to be free to do different things, and not feel that Im too old I can still go to festivals, spend a day kayaking or a day at home reading a book, whatever makes me feel good.
60 – moving forward on my terms. This is my 4th entry since turning 60 and these posts are my thoughts on moving on in my life, making reflections and using this on my self-discovery. If this resonates with you, or you want to ask a question feel free to comment, Id love to hear from you and will respond on here on my Facebook page.
