Where to live in later life?

by | Retirement

As I share info on rethinking retirement, it will cover so many areas of our lives. Whilst career and work is still important, so too is thinking about where we live.

Thinking about retirement, we also need to think about where we live and all the stuff we have accumulated. Why do we spend the first part of our lives buying things and the rest getting rid of stuff!

Our 60s and 70s can be the best of times. Still fit and healthy, working on our terms. Enjoying work.

Many people will consider a move of home as they age. Others will look to make their home better suit them as they age, with a wet room etc.

I created this video a couple of years ago. I was going to update it, but the content is good, and it was created as I made the move to move from a large home in the country, with lots of land and outbuildings to a 2 bedroom flat in town.

  • I needed to clear the clutter
  • There was too much stuff
  • It made me question why I even bought so many CDs, DVDs, etc.

But I had, and I wanted to get rid of things. A lot of things. Some I sold; some went to charity shops. Some I gave away.

Easy enough to do this at 60.

But if I was 80? Or 70 something with health problems.  Would I want to go through this process of decluttering later in life?

Maybe this is something we can do over time?

Would you want somewhere smaller?

A move of home isn’t always to something smaller. You may prefer more living space, so you and your partner have room for your interests.

You may decide to move to the country, or the sea side.

When I discuss this with clients making retirement plans I help them to consider the move from all aspects. What is the seaside like in the winter. A move to the country, but how far from the theatre? How well will it suit in 5 or 10 years time?

Is this something you are considering?
